The Nun - from the Conjuring Universe

Quick Background

Ok so I have to be straight with you here, I went on a serious Conjuring universe binge. I will be writing up short reviews for each of the films, but wanted to start by saying that I watched them, not in order of release, but in chronological order. Big shout out to Vinnie Mancuso of Collider.com (https://collider.com/the-conjuring-movies-in-order-how-to-watch/) for putting the movies in order, and making my life easier.

Of all these movies I did want to point out that The Curse of La Llorona (2019), can be watched out of context or skipped completely as it does not have Ed or Lorraine Warren in the movie. They are mentioned, although not by name, by the priest Father Perez who is played by Tony Amendola, who is also in Annabelle (2014). However he is really the only tie in that is evident for this movie, so enjoy it in order, on its own, or skip it, totally up to you.

About the Movie

Now, the movie I want to start with is The Nun (2018), which technically starts off the movie franchise although it was the fifth movie released. It takes place in the early 1950’s in a monastery of cloistered nuns. The main characters here are a specialist priest Father Burke, played by Demián Bichir, and a novitiate (someone who hasn’t taken their vows yet to become a full nun) Sister Irene, played by Taissa Farmiga. They are called in by the Vatican to investigate what appears to be a hanging suicide of a nun in the monastery. This was called in by Frenchie, Jonas Bloquet, who if you’ve seen the other movies you may recognize.

I don’t want to give you any real spoilers so what I will say is that you may need to turn off the lights because a lot of this movie takes place in dark spaces, and you may miss some things if your tv has a glare. The demonic entity that is The Nun is actually pretty terrifying. You get to see its real face quickly before it takes on its more human-esc appearance.

Yay or Nay

The cast is great and there are a few awesome jump scares, but all in all not as scary as I was expecting. The creep factor is definitely high and the twists and turns of the story are unpredictable. Which I have to say is pretty impressive, because I’m one of those annoying people who can usually figure out the twists in movies. That being said if you’re looking for a scare your pants of movie, this isn’t it. If you are looking to tumble over the twists and turns of a story and be fully creeped out, this is a go to.

All in all a pretty good beginning to a rather terrifying series of movies. I have to say YAY!

So pop the popcorn and have a scare.
