Tissue Paper decor

So I figured I would start my crafting section with a super easy and fun craft. This tissue paper semi-sphere is great for wall, table or ceiling décor. For this craft I was making centerpieces for my goddaughter/niece’s first birthday. It was Abby Cadabby/Sesame Street themed, so the color scheme was pink, purple and turquoise.

What you’ll need:

  • bulk tissue paper in your wanted colors - I used 6 full pieces for each semi-sphere

  • stapler with staples

  • sharp scissors (optional)

  • if making ceiling or wall décor you’ll need string and tape to adhere the decorations

Start by layering your 6 pieces of tissue paper, as I had 3 colors I made sure to keep with the pattern of purple, pink, turquoise. Make sure the papers are lined up as neatly as you can make them. This is when you will start the accordion folding. While you are folding, the papers may shift a little, this is normal, just make sure the shift isn’t too extreme.

The next step here is to find the middle, feel free to use a ruler, and put two staples here one on each side to ensure the fold stays. If you plan to make these ahead of time like I did, then you can leave them folded until you reach your venue. This way they don’t get smashed or damaged.

A step I skipped was cutting the edges, if you prefer a more rounded edge you can cut a semi-circle on both ends. You can also cut a point into both ends to make a spikier look. Again, I skipped this because I wanted a more delicate look.

Once ready you will lay the papers on their side, so that the staples are facing you, unfold the edges to make a full circle. You will then gently but firmly pull each layer upwards. Take your time here, the tissue paper is delicate and can tear. Be sure not to lift the last layer or your semi-sphere will be lopsided.

I’ve placed my left hand in the photo for size reference.

Your end product should look like the above. These are fun and easy and relatively large. If you prefer smaller semi-spheres than you can cut the tissue paper down to size before you start the folding step. Remember that your semi-sphere will be half the height of the measurement of the tissue paper before you start crafting.

This size is a bit large but with the image below shows two of them on a venue’s ten person table.

Let me know if you’ve tried the craft, let me know if you have questions.

Happy Crafting!
